At dusk the following day, Sandy retrieved the key she had placed in her top drawer and left the apartment. Dressed all in black, she drew her hoodie over her head and scurried off in the direction of the tribal offices. Once there, she used the key to open the main door, slipped inside and took the hallway in search of the records room. The majority of the offices were on the first floor and she quickly located the one in question toward the rear of the building. After surveying the hallway to make sure no one saw her, she stepped into the office, locked the door behind her, and flicked on her flashlight.

The flashlight beam revealed a large wooden desk along one wall and file cabinets along the other three. On closer inspection, she noticed that the drawer fronts were labeled alphabetically. She had to drop down on her knees to locate the one labeled D-F. With the flashlight on the floor, she rummaged through the drawer and found a file with the Edakee name typed on the tab. She carried the file to a nearby table and opened it, rifling through the pile of papers, piece by piece.

After combing through most of the file, she had found nothing. Most of the pages contained information that was unrelated to the land transaction and useless to her, concerning land that had been in Tonito’s family for as long as there was a record. It looked as if she had taken an expedition into futility when her eyes alighted on a piece of paper folded in half. She unfolded it to discover a hand-written note assigning Tonito Edakee grazing land, signed by Harley Dista in 1989.

The paper trembled in her unsteady hand. According to the note, Harley had sold forty acres of land to Tonito Edakee eleven years earlier. This document absolutely refuted Luci’s story about her father losing the land to Tonito in a card game.

She sat back, perplexed. Why the hell would Luci lie to her?

A voice just outside the room alerted her to the presence of others. She quickly extinguished her flashlight, hoisted her daypack onto her back, and slid as quietly as she could into an adjacent closet. In the dark, she stumbled over a bucket, which scraped against the ground. She froze. Had she been heard? Sweat broke out on her brow.

The sound of a door opening reached her, then light streamed through the crack under the closet door. Her heart did a back-flip. A couple of uniforms hung on a rail at the back of the closet. She quickly and quietly slithered behind them and held her breath, afraid to move. Every muscle in her body tensed with the sound of a door knob turning. Someone she couldn’t see stood inches from where she hid She prayed they didn’t notice her feet only partially hidden under the uniforms.

Whoever was there took what seemed an eternity in the closet before they finally shut the door. She
